Course Overview

A complete IC3 preparatory course to help students to quickly establish a comfort level that promotes rapid and through learning. The course is aligned to IC3, a certification program that servers as a universal measure of basic computer knowledge and Internet skills. Eye-catching graphics, integrated audio narration, a user-friendly interface, and up-to-date technical information help beginners enter the exciting world of computers. You will learn the basic underlying concepts of computers including the process for installing and configuring a Windows operating system and an application program, using office and multimedia applications, setting up and maintaining a computer, understanding the parts of a computer, electricity and safety, networking, and number systems.

This course is self-paced and must be completed within 90 days of the start date. The grade is pass/fail.

Curriculum consists of the following nine units:

Unit 1 Computer Hardware
An overview of computer hardware, including descriptions of the various hardware components that comprise a computer and how a computer operates.

Unit 2 Computer Software
An overview of computer software, including descriptions of various operating systems and how a computer interprets and processes data.

Unit 3 Networking An overview of networking and system administration

Unit 4 The Internet and E-mail
An overview of the Internet, including the evolution of the online world, how the Internet works, and how to use e-mail.

Unit 5 Word Processing and Desktop Publishing
An overview of word processing and desktop publishing, including an explanation of how they are different, descriptions of the most common functions, and a basic introduction to the theories of document design.

Unit 6 Spreadsheets
An overview of spreadsheets, what they are used for, how they function, and good spreadsheet design principles.

Unit 7 Presentations
An overview of presentations, how to use them effectively, and good presentation design principles.

Unit 8 Web Design
An overview of the basic principles of Web design.

Unit 9 Database
An overview of database, types of database, and planning and creating a database.

  • Access to a computer connected to the Internet.
  • Minimum Pentium Processor with minimum 12 MB RAM
  • Windows 98 or higher; Mac OS 7.5 or higher.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later; Netscape 6.1 or later
  • Macromedia Flash 5.0 or higher and Apple QuickTime 4.0 or higher
  • Display minimum resolution 800x600 at 256 colors.
